Generic Listener #675 Happened across this album quite by accident searching for material on the other Ptarmigan psych/prog/folk outfit from the early 70's. This new Ptarmigan is also in that realm of excellence with shimmery evocative songs that satisfy both my indie/folk ears but also my progressive leanings as well. A must hear for indy/prog/folk lovers and a real treasure from Peterborough. Favorite track: Spirit Wakes.

1.
The other night, as I lay still I had the visions of a man With his harmony and trill As I was searching for a friend on the coast The water turned to peaks And the oceans into dew I said you were a dancer, and he mentioned that he taught The art of stage to you You know that surrealistic truth Without much notice the landforms had changed He was a magician of sorts Put his stated art in shame The tune he whistled inside It entered and stayed I wish I knew it all by heart For my life it could’ve saved For the wolves I thought were gentle They snarled as they passed The same damn tune the man had sung And I was swallowed as I gasped And I stumbled through stones, without my new friend Though he’d warned about the pack Their curiosity sure to end As the animals drew near, I heard in my head Note for note the same As I awoke safe in my bed The tune he whistled inside It entered and stayed Of course I knew it all by heart For my life it could’ve saved For the wolves I thought were gentle They snarled as they passed The same damn tune the man had sung And I was swallowed as I gasped

Spirit Wakes 05:32
Distance just a warning to the sun That I won’t go, not another one Damages are foreign to the cell Well of course they are, because you built it well You built it well, you built it well That cloak I wore to tempt it in the night Through cracks I slipped, and the darkness fights I won’t keep the chamber is good form Well of course I won’t, with the spirit borne Oh adorned, oh adorned Ghosts oh don’t they strike a fight beyond these walls Forest tender, defender falls A shame it is to keep the felon locked from his Image healing without’s within Long as I’ve been covered in the fold That life I led, lying bound untold Stories just a figment of the mind The healer’s hand, with the shackles bind Oh they bind, oh they bind Ghosts oh don’t they strike a fight beyond these walls The forest tender, defender falls A shame it is to keep the felon locked from his Image healing without’s within My dear oh we climb, for the outside we pined And the tiredness creaks like the shackles tied Like a church oh it rings, when you call out and sing Is it strange that we sin for what side we’re on? On the catwalk we lay, held the darkness at bay And the concrete kept tabs on the morning light And that night we felt safe, because the spirits did wake To protect us from what they tried to escape

Peaks 04:28
When the peaks did reignite You knew better than to fight Curses came when they had sworn You looked better not forlorn Oh, the great divide Those swollen eyes Great furs and hides Fathers please lend me your ear Fens have grown this cold long year If you’re to wager ‘gainst defeat Cut my locks and show my feet Sold on broken skies The old crow flies Meets his demise Nobles speak out easily “I’ll never let those grackles sing” The crow he sleeps so idly His perch is taken, fallen king The elder myths they did convince Of a land worth taking The double edge of sprouting thought With reclamation brings profit lost Fathers lost in some dark fit Leaving place for me to sit Rumour sprang up from the ground Easily silence the sounds Craze, I fell into Punish I do Ambitions muse News arrived by the evening tide and unravelled
4.
So it is said that the lonely ones Who would wander, bereft by those Seljuq sons Would die and weep, their souls would keep and take the grounds Oh our excursions they made a row To win these old hearts did require a vow Austerity, the only route to smash the gods Steel shepherds lay down, by the old mill my friends Feathered fears be woken, conscience saves these sounds If it seems to fade, young ones should gather round So we keep thinking “why is it must”? That the wind might settle, turn into dust The shrines they built to smother out the sarus cranes The steps they smashed, his name they dubbed But it sure looked like Beelzebub The angled forms turn into spheres and back they turn Steel shepherds lay down, by the old mill my friends Feathered fears be woken, conscience saves these sounds If it seems to fade, young ones should gather round

Stilts 03:55
The nest up above he built You know the sun’s held up by stilts He engineered his ever enduring fears The emptiness he felt, landlocked career he dealt The animal domain, the tail they brought him changed the pain And sight he gained The course of mammals past, those stormy clouds he longed to grow a mast His mate a crippled bear, his genes to soar she did not share And jumped impaired The nest up above he built You know the sun’s held up by stilts He engineered his ever enduring fears The house they could not see, those stilts they rose the height of trees His esoteric peace, was so high up they did ignore Until it poured Soon the tower grew too high, wobbled and swayed over city so far The storm grew into lightning strikes, struck those stilts and did set fire The nest up above he built You know the sun’s held up by stilts He engineered his ever enduring fears

O Zephyr 04:59
Stop the car you know that I Couldn’t let you see this old animal die Like buzzards we must pick and pry Ideas born when left will lie Creation myth was written down Through tongues that tell we spread them around All things that grow must start from the ground Create we might with borrowed sound O Zephyr, carry me From this walk I’ve trodden so carefully If I might claim some divine source Will the ears perk up like ears of corn? Volumes lift me off the earth While my verses ponder so dark in the dirt Regardless guardian sing up from the mirk The pains of growth, a flightless bird O Zephyr, carry me From this walk I’ve trodden so carefully If I might claim some divine source Will the ears perk up like ears of corn? Darling I can see the rust On your woven cloak of tin stardust You’ve always been a cavern torn An expedition, along the shore Within the silos of making There live the only ones gone crazy That hermitage we longed for The scavengers do maketh more by taking If I don’t tinker anything I will hang here by a string You know the scavengers do maketh more by taking Darling I can see the rust On your woven cloak of tin stardust You’ve always been a cavern torn An expedition, along the shore

Limbs 05:02
I entered slowly without sound The territory guarded by hounds Without a morsel I tried to bear A shelter tossed in open air That hefty ranger tends entwined My solitude he grants in kind I lie awake, no comfort found Like sprites my thoughts did dance around I hear your voice through pines and the simmer of black flies I couldn’t have waited for you love, The fruits only fade with Time, the measure that grows and extends my limbs To pluck strings and sing notes It’s stopgap, but the closer I’ve felt The one I left behind She’s a full moon set so fine I’m collapsed here on the earth Just passing time The forest floor, she lets me go Though her cradle leaves wanting more Than a frame for memories And distant shores Far away the buildings rise My attachment to does underlie The one she lives among the clouds Where I’ve made myself so disallowed The city it sleeps and wanders the paths I’ve taken Truly, though through the Expansion, feeds my loneliness A newly formed horizon, a crystalline construction

Bloom 05:18
Like a sheep in wolf’s clothing You saw me there, thought I’d stolen that face With the verses of my songs misplaced Those electric tomes to your distaste I was tarred and feathered With that motion I did gather and plume Not a self-destructive thought cocoon Those petals fall and wait to bloom Songs of home form another starting point to roam When the guards had gone and run, and those eyes begin to roll And that time itself wouldn’t take this long with flesh and bone When the morning came around, we’d all but overgrown I was carved and nurtured So I moulded you the way a father gives From mud to madness, chose to live And that noble tenant did forgive Songs of home form another starting point to roam When the guards had gone and run, and those eyes begin to roll And that time itself wouldn’t take this long with flesh and bone When the morning came around, we’d all but overgrown
